Unlock Solar with Community Funding for Sustainable Growth in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly

Community groups and organisations across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly now have an exciting opportunity to secure a share of £3.5 million in funding as part of the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Good Growth Programme.

18th February, 2025

Community groups and organisations across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly now have an exciting opportunity to secure a share of £3.5 million in funding as part of the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Good Growth Programme. With the UK Government confirming an additional £47.3 million from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (SPF) for 2025-26, this funding will help to drive economic growth and strengthen local communities.

Managed by Cornwall Council, this funding builds upon an existing three-year SPF allocation of £137 million, which is set to conclude in March 2025. The latest round of funding is specifically targeted at supporting local projects that enhance infrastructure, sustainability, and community engagement.

Available Funding Streams

Eligible organisations, including charities, community interest companies, charitable incorporated organisations, and town and parish councils, can apply for funding through two key programmes:

Community Levelling Up Programme (£2.5m available)

Community Capacity Fund (£1,051,100 available)

Cllr Carol Mould, portfolio holder for neighbourhoods at Cornwall Council, emphasised the significance of this funding: “Having secured a fourth year of funding from Government for Cornwall and Scilly, we are delighted to be opening applications for these community funds. We have already seen the hugely positive impact that funding like this can have on our local communities, and I would urge groups and organisations to find out more.”

Cllr Steve Sims, Isles of Scilly Council portfolio holder for transport, economy, and tourism, highlighted the importance of this funding for the islands: “The final allocation of Community Levelling Up funds has been made available to the Islands. To date, this programme has supported projects like the Island Haven, Buzza Bus, and the Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust. We encourage local groups to apply and make the most of this opportunity.”

Key Funding Priorities

The funding aims to support projects that improve community spaces, contribute to sustainability, and enhance accessibility.

  1. Sustainable and Accessible Infrastructure

Investment in infrastructure is a key priority, with funding available for capital improvements that enhance sustainability, reduce energy costs, and improve accessibility.

Examples include:

  • Installing ramps and hearing loops to improve accessibility in community halls.
  • Upgrading renewable energy systems such as solar panels and heat pumps to reduce carbon footprints and lower energy bills.
  • Refurbishing local infrastructure to ensure long-term community benefit.

At Natural Generation, we specialise in renewable energy solutions and can provide technical support to help with any funding or planning applications. If you are considering incorporating solar energy or other green technologies into your community project, we can assist with feasibility studies and technical documentation.

  1. Green Spaces and Wellbeing

Investment in public parks, paths, playgrounds, and outdoor spaces that promote social engagement and physical activity. Projects that enhance biodiversity and encourage sustainable land use are particularly encouraged.

  1. Events and Culture

Funding is available for community-led events and cultural initiatives that provide long-term benefits to local economies. While one-off events will not be funded, projects that establish ongoing community engagement activities will be considered.

The Benefits of Solar Power for Community Spaces

Integrating solar power into community spaces offers a range of benefits, from lowering electricity costs to reducing environmental impact. By harnessing renewable energy, community centres, halls, and recreational facilities can significantly cut their reliance on fossil fuels, leading to long-term cost savings and improved sustainability.

Solar energy systems also provide a reliable power source that can support essential services, ensuring that community spaces remain functional even during power outages.

Additionally, investing in solar technology can enhance public awareness and engagement with renewable energy, inspiring local residents to consider sustainable solutions in their own homes and businesses.

How to Apply

Funding applications for the Community Levelling Up Programme range from £25,000 to £200,000, with applications due by 28th February 2025. Successful projects must be completed by 31st December 2025.

For the Community Capacity Fund, grants between £1,000 and £24,999 are available on a rolling basis until all funds are allocated. This fund particularly supports grassroots organisations in rural areas, helping them develop project ideas and secure further funding through feasibility studies, business plans, and small capital purchases.
